Glowing, Tan Skin Without Sun Damage
Living in Arizona, sunshine is just part of everyday life. You don’t have to try very hard to get a little color when the sun seems to show up nearly every single day. I do spend time outside walking, running errands, and enjoying the warm weather, so I naturally pick up a bit of a base tan. Over the years, I’ve become much more aware of how important it is to protect my skin and avoid unnecessary sun exposure. That’s where self-tanner has become one of my favorite little beauty tricks. Instead of chasing the sun to deepen my tan, I use a good sunless tanner to keep my color even, smooth out tan lines, and maintain that healthy glow without overdoing the UV. It lets me enjoy the Arizona sunshine while still being smart about my skin.

A real “glow” is a combo of smooth texture + even color + light reflecting hydration. The good news: you can get all three with dry brushing, a great self-tanner, and a sparkle/glow lotion—without baking in UV.
Quick note: self-tanner doesn’t protect you from the sun. If you’re outside, still wear SPF.

Why dry brushing makes your tan look better (and last looking better)

Dry brushing is basically gentle physical exfoliation. It buffs off flaky, uneven surface skin so your color looks smoother and more even, and your lotions absorb better. Dermatology sources commonly describe it as exfoliation that can temporarily improve the look/feel of dryness and texture.
Here’s the “renews your tan” truth:
- Self-tan works on the outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum). DHA (the main tanning ingredient) reacts with amino acids on the skin surface to create that bronzed color.
- As that surface layer sheds, your color fades. Exfoliation (including dry brushing) can remove patchy fade and help the next application go on evenly—so your tan looks “fresh” again. (It’s more accurate to say it refreshes the look of your tan, not that it deepens it.)
But don’t overdo it!
Too much physical exfoliation can cause irritation and damage your skin barrier. You should exfoliate 24 hours before applying self tanner to give skin time to settle.
How to Apply Glow Lotion for That “Sun-Kissed” Look
Glow lotions and shimmer oils are the finishing step that make your tan look healthy, radiant, and a little bit sparkly instead of flat. The key is applying them strategically, not everywhere. When done right, your skin looks like it’s naturally glowing in the sunlight.
Here’s the simple method I use.
1. Start With Smooth, Hydrated Skin
Glow products always look best on smooth skin.
Before applying:
- Take a quick shower or rinse
- Lightly exfoliate if needed
- Apply a regular moisturizer first
This helps the glow lotion blend evenly and prevents shimmer from clinging to dry spots like knees or elbows.
TDLouise Tip:
If you use self-tanner, apply glow lotion the day after tanning, not immediately after. This helps your tan fully develop and keeps everything even.
My simple 7-day “glow schedule”
Day 1 (prep):
Dry brush → shower → moisturize.
Day 2 (tan day):
Quick rinse/shower → fully dry skin → self-tanner with mitt → let develop.
Day 3 (seal + glow):
Moisturize daily → add glow oil/lotion to highlight areas.
Day 4 (maintenance):
Moisturize + a tiny bit of shimmer on legs/arms.
Day 5 (smooth):
Light dry brush (gentle) OR a soft washcloth → moisturize.
Day 6 (touch-up):
Use drops on face/neck or a gradual tanner on dry patches.
Day 7 (reset):
Longer shower + hydrate → plan next tan.
